Almost 50 schools - including 15 state schools - have decided to teach sixth-formers an alternative to A-levels known as the Pre-U from September, it was announced yesterday.
Leading independent schools, including Eton, have already indicated they will teach it.
The exam was developed by Cambridge University and has been likened to traditional A-level study. Its top grade is rated higher than the A* grade at A-level, which will be awarded from 2010.
The Pre-U, short for Pre-University, comprises three subjects and an extended research project. Students sit exams at the end of the two-year course, which focus on essay-based questions.
A spokeswoman for the University of Cambridge International Examinations said more than 100 schools were planning to offer the Pre-U within the next three years.
UCAS is expected to announce in September what points the qualification will accrue for university entrance.

well, zugeman, it hardly started with this government. The examinations system had been rotting away for many many years before 1997. Doubteless it will continue to do so.
