In the world of fashion these days it is rare to get new stories. Generally, it’s just different versions of what has gone before. And so it is with the latest male accessory – eyeliner.
20 years ago I fell in love with a boy who regularly travelled on the No 97 bus in Birmingham with eyes that had just the faintest trace of kohl. But even that hint was hardly trailblazing, ten years earlier my older sister’s male New Romantic friends had sat in our kitchen smearing their eyes with my mother’s Avon eyeliner.
Now the chemist chain Superdrug has decided to relieve Emo kids of the indignity of having to dip into mum’s make-up bag by bringing out an eyeliner for men.
In stores now is Guyliner, described as giving “an accurate, subtle defined look to the contour of the eye, making them appear larger, more distinct and seductive” and retailing at £6.50.
Superdrug obviously thinks there’s a market for it, but will it only attract fans of My Chemical Romance, or will the new minimal packaging and macho name persuade non-Emo men to take up the glam look?
Where better to test the new product then at the Big Chill festival where a relaxed atmosphere and all-day drinking lowered men's resistance to being given panda eyes in the interest of research.
First up I approach 32-year-old building manager Mikey Askew’s wife Sarah to apply the Guyliner to her husband’s eyelids.
Whether it’s the champagne talking or not, Askew says he would definitely consider purchasing and using the product in his hometown of Leeds.
“Well, I’d send Sarah to buy it, but it would look good on a night out clubbing,” he says. Mrs Askew agrees. “It makes him look quite edgy, it’s sexy.”
29-year-old designer Kieron Bakewell is next to try out the product. “I wouldn’t buy it, but it does make my eyes look good,” he says pouting for his girlfriend.
The idea of wearing make-up for the purpose of seduction may seem odd to many blokes, but according to builder Michael Denny, it works. The 21-year-old from Deal, in Kent, says that at university he used mascara to accentuate his eyes.
“Girls liked that,” he says. “I haven’t got a problem with wearing make-up; I’ve worn tinted moisturiser and concealer before to hide the effects of a big night out.”
Still, Denny’s friend, 24 year-old Matt Broster, is not too convinced by the rock ‘n’ roll look.
“I wouldn’t go out and buy it,” he says, “but if it helped to pull girls, I’d be up for it.”
With men discovering girl's weakness for smudged kohl eyes, sticks of Guyliner may just fly off the shelves and into bloke's toiletry bags across the UK.
