The Mutton is green. Well, as green as most of us, which means he could be greener, but likes to think he's doing his bit for the planet. That means recycling, occasional proper cycling, and an eye for an energy-saving device.
So imagine my delight when I first came upon a solar-powered recharger for my iPod. What a brilliant idea. The Solio Classic Hybrid Charger is a neat fold-out gadget which has three solarpanel “petals” which can be deployed in sunlight. You then plug your iPod into it and hey presto, you're ready to rock (literally). It can charge other stuff too - a fully charged Solio will replenish an average phone twice.
But perhaps most important, second to slowing the demise of the polar ice caps of course, is that it looks incredibly cool when you get it out of its little sporty zip-up protective case (handmade from recycled Colombian lorry tyres, no less), flip it open insouciantly, and place it on the table on the Eurostar.
The thing about a piece of kit like this is that it makes you feel like James Bond. That's the appeal. The green-ness is, I fear, secondary - I don't think most British blokes see organic cotton or bleach-free dyeing processes and the like as big incentives to buy something. But if it looks like it's just come out of Q Branch, then that's a different matter.
This was undoubtedly the appeal of Dunhill's Avorities Solar Panel Bag, a black nylon carrier, waterproof, scratch and stain resistant, which sadly is no longer in production. But if you can find one on eBay, I'd snap it up. You see, apart from nice functional touches such as nylon-covered zips to ensure the rain stays right out, inside there are myriad pockets in which to store your kit - BlackBerry, MP3 player, digital camera and laptop. All these can be plugged into a concealed battery, which comes supplied, and which is itself charged by three solar panels on the bag's side. All you need now is the Aston Martin DBS to go with your luggage...but that would increase your carbon footprint.
There is of course only one problem with portable bits of kit - what happens when you leave them on the bus, which given that the DBS is verboten, is a distinct possibility. Well, those helpful Italians at Ermenegildo Zegna have the answer. And at this point I should perhaps apologise: this column appears to have lapsed into a kind of chatty Tomorrow's World-speak. Maybe that's what happens when you see the future? You start to point it out like Raymond Baxter with his Parker pen, or enthuse about it like James Burke.
So here goes: in the Zegna Sport collection there is this ingenious piece called the Solar Jacket. As the name suggests, this is an item of clothing containing panels that can do the business with your electronic gizmos. Made out of a lightweight, water-repellent and breathable techno fabric called Microtone, this baby has its solar panels on a removable Neoprene collar. These allow you to charge stuff while you're literally on the move, and the jacket's not bad-looking either, in silver or black, with futuristic military flash-style panels on the collar.
So there you have it. Groovy green stuff that's supremely useful and makes you feel good about yourself. What could be more 21st century? Now pay attention, 007...
