Sir, I too am “one of those Seventies radicals who has never, ever, felt ashamed of calling herself a feminist”, although sadly never had a pair of dungarees. Joan Smith is right (“Feminism isn’t a four-letter word”, times2, Aug 14) that feminism is about human rights, self-respect and consideration for others, and she is right to express concerns about the toxic nature of the influences on young women today. But it won’t work to teach feminism as a discrete subject on the curriculum.
Feminism has to be lived and breathed every day in the culture of the school. Self-worth, good sense and knowing that there is more to life than emulating Paris Hilton come naturally in girls’ schools. If we are to ensure that all girls have “the language and ethics that allow them to be themselves”, isn’t it time to reconsider the advantages of single-sex schools?

Absolutely right, Vicky. I went to a girl's only grammar school in the sixties and for me feminism has never been a dogma or an ideology, just common sense.
Sorry Martin, I would consider myself a modern feminist, too and I have been living with a lovely self respecting man for some years.
Lynda, Sheffield,
are you suggesting paris hilton has no self-respect or common sense? that's not very sisterly. if only feminism were really about consideration for others, eh?

Feminism is no more. It used to be about self respect and achievement. Now it is about state dependancy and positive discrimination. It is a toxic dogma that damages most the people it seeks to help. Women are perfectly competent adults and they should resolve all of their problems themselves.

Unfortunately, modern "feminism" is quite different from seventies feminism. No self respecting man these days would go anywhere near a modern "feminist".
