I wonder if any of the 'highly educated african immigrants' that Willo from London refered to were from Zimbabwe or any of the other despot regions of that blot on the landscape? The old question always raises its head - 'if you don't like it, don't live here!'
I work with many people from companies on this list who are conscientious prefessionals and do not deserve this pathetic type of ranting.
sean, sevenoaks,
What capitalist economy isn't built on a scam? you won't find any place to live where greedy people won't try to squeeze money out of you
jim, Bristol, England
I agree with Peter Fordham. Somebody should be seriously investigating the goings on of the Decent Homes Contracts in East Midlands where millions of pounds have been frittered away by one council alone. This is all very serious.
Dave Wilson, Mansfield Woodhouse, UK
I am a Contractor's Quantity Surveyor currently working in the building industry and have also priced multi million pound contracts. I have certainly never been involved in anything of this ilk and it is typical that the media are yet again branding the entire industry as cowboys. Is it any wonder that the number of degree qualified entrants to the industry is dropping like a stone? It is unsurprising that the public sector is implicated in this, the people involved in dealing with contractors need to have a certain degree of knowledge about what they want and how to get it. Commercial developers have to have these skills to survive and make money as usual the public sector just doesn't, which leaves them open to abuse. Obviously the industry has it faults but there are many people working long hours in trying conditions who will resent being tarred with the same bruch. I know, I'm one of them.
jane clark, leeds,
The construction industry is totally corrupt to the extent that having 'paid' for the work, performance becomes secondary and poor performance is rewarded with more contracts.
This is not restricted to the public purse it is happening every day in all walks of construction and is an accepted part of contracting.
Don't just target public spending, target the whole industry and allow honest contractors/sub-contractors who perform in an honest and proffessional manner the opportunity to succeed.
Martin, rochester, kent
I work in construction and know today of straight bribary that takes place in order for a company to get work. The owner of the company says that if he does not do this someone else will! I know of massive fraud in years gone by involving the biggest property company in Britain and one of their most senior officials letting contracts on bribes costing shareholders millions of pounds. I actually believed that the only way of getting on in the construction world was to bribe people, which for me was not why I was in construction. I am today the owner of a successful property company and a happy builder, never bribed anyone, happy in my work with a love of construction and never working for others in the swamp that so many small minded thieves see as their only way of getting on in life.
I have previously considered adding to my academic qualifications by doing a Phd with a thesis based on the rediculas costs involved in construction. This recent revelation is encouraging.
David, London,
Hopefully the report will also identify the politicians and councillors who have helped in these scams by closing one eye at the right time.
Peter Fordham, Pego, Spain
It is foolish to believe that this level of collusion would exist without the overt acceptance of the government. I would venture to guess that it has been at their insistance. 112 companies will never agree on anything except when forced to by a controlling party. I would wager that the government will end up with egg on its face and that the businesses listed above are exhonerated of any wrong doing, because the offending behavior was mandated by a government body. I think this will turn out to be more about the incompentance of government than corruption although the end results generally look the same. It wil be interesting to see the facts.
Larry, Stratford,
Stealing from the public purse used to be considered treasonous, did it not? The directors of these companies should be bankrupted, prosecuted and given lengthy sentences.
Jaques Blanc, Birmingham, UK
I have been saying for many years that the UK / England is not a democracy as we are continually told. I was born in Twickenham, English through and through, but believe this country is no different to any third world dictatorship. So incredibly sad. I have given up thinking about what 'the ordinary person' can do amongst this incredible mess.
Clare, Birmingham, England
Not much of a surprise, really. This is textbook Mafia behaviour, where bids are agreed ahead of the tender amongst the builders. Still, compared to what goes on here in Ireland, small potatoes indeed.
John Claro, Cleggan, Ireland
Just wait until the post mortem takes place on or after (if it actually ever takes place) for the Olympics due to be held here. It wont only be building companies, employment offices, etc. who will be shown to be crooked, there will be all those officials and Ministers of this and that. No names, we all know who is at it!
Anne Wotana Kaye, London, England
How nice to see so many of one's former customers lined up like this. How kind of the OFT to remind me of wy I left Construction and the UK
Vic Boyd, Los Angeles, USA / California
Any reasonable human being would have told you so. The general feeling amongst people I know (mainly highly educated african immigrants) is that this country is built on a scam! It manifests in any direction you care to look be it socio-economic to the spiritual. As I live here, I have no option but to pray for it. The day I leave, to hell with the UK. Nothing personal but c'est la vie. Kudos to the report writers though but no news there. I bet you, the same price fixing scam continues even as you read this in one guise or another because that is what (Great) Britain or (United) Kingdom, now plain England is really about when you scratch the surface.
Willo, London,
