Balsom plays the Haydn Trumpet Concerto with cheerful virtuosity on her third EMI disc since she first came to prominence at the final of the BBC Young Musician of the Year competition a decade ago. She announces herself abruptly during the introduction and delivers the rising main theme like joyful news. Her tone is dry, and there is no easy luxuriating in brassy radiance or generous acoustics. The andante is a contemplative withdrawal, Balsom's legato soothing the ear in extreme contrast to her dazzling tongue-feats of the euphoric finale. She's hugely impressive with Hummel's rapid-fire Rondo earlier on the disc. The excellent Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen are no more than Balsom deserves.
