Osborne's account of Britten's 1938 Piano Concerto Op 13 is full of fire and wit. He dazzles in the long, unrelentingly fast first movement, flicking at the accents as if taking potshots at the sneering brasses. He plays the sour second movement with breezy nonchalance, the third with a heavy improvisatory tread and the Prokofiev-like March with mock-heroic fanfares and percussive virtuosity. If a certain epic quality is missing, he compensates with a sense of Britten's youthful self-confidence. The disc also includes the composer's other works for solo piano and orchestra, Young Apollo and Diversions for Left Hand, which lack nothing in spirit.
