Young pop singer Lily Allen received a very public dressing down from industry veteran Sir Elton John last night as the pair hosted the GQ Men of the Year Awards.
In front of an audience comprising the crème of the entertainment world, the 23-year-old chart-topper sipped champagne on stage until she began slurring and swearing.
When Allen told the audience at London's Royal Opera House "now we reach a very special point in the evening", Sir Elton replied: "What, you are going to have another drink?"
Allen, dressed demurely in a full-length ball gown, responded: "F*** off Elton, I'm 40 years younger than you, I have my whole life ahead of me."
The 61-year-old superstar, watched by audience members including Gordon Ramsay, Thandie Newton and Elle MacPherson, then told her: “I could still snort you under the table.”
She replied: “F*** off. I don't know what you are talking about.”
Allen also indulged in a bout of boorish ad libbing as 82-year-old crooner Tony Bennett was awarded the Inspiration Award. Sir Elton introduced him, referencing his age, to which Allen interrupted: “I’ll still f*** him.”
She later announced that her brother, actor Alfie Allen, was engaged to Donkey Punch star Jamie Winstone. The high-profile pair had previously managed to keep their wedding plans private.
The singer’s display was watched by some of the music world’s biggest names, gathered to accept the GQ magazine’s annual gongs.
Led Zeppelin were given the Outstanding Achievement Award, after their much-lauded comeback concert last December, while producer de jour Mark Ronson was handed the Maverick Award.
Primal Scream were presented the gong for Band of the Year by Elle Machpherson and while accepting it, bass player Gary “Mani” Mounfield gave the audience a laugh. Looking at the six-foot-tall supermodel, he declared: “F****** hell, a giraffe in a dress. Nice one.”
Boris Johnson, shrugged off criticism of his dress sense at the Beijing Olympics, to front up to style gurus Trinny and Susannah who presented him with the award for Politician of the Year.
Other winners included chef Gordon Ramsay, who was named Entrepreneur of the Year, Gavin & Stacey actor James Corden, who picked up Breakthrough of the Year, and the Mighty Boosh, who were awarded Comedians of the Year.

As it turns out, about 2 months after this happened, Elton John released a statement, that he and Lily Allen, are friends and that the whole thing was stupid. Of course Lily Allen blogged about it the next day.. her biggest problem is ''not' drinking it's blogging.
kevin, ocala fl, America
Honestly?
She had a few drinks, she till tried to act professsionally. Elton John interrupted her. Really, he was rude.
What he said about 'snorting her under the table' was incredible. He was implying he uses cocaine and can do more of it than her! How unprofessional and promoting drug use!
Sarah, London,
It does matter, because these two are idols. Basically, the message Allen displayed was that it's okay to get drunk off your ass while presenting at a formal celebration. Elton's lack of grace was not any better. I admire both of their music, but their behavior was not very becoming.
Denise, Hirakata,
At least she has the excuse of youth ... which is more than Elton John has. His obscene remark about a dangerous drug should be the headline ......
Paul Johnson, Hartley Wintney, UK
maybe elton was talking about "snorting" in the liquour sense. The idea of taking a "snort" of whiskey was around long before cocaine. Just like the Brits saying something about "smoking a fag". In the US this would mean something entirely different.
Steve , Charlotte, usa
Elton can really sing and is a great songwriter (IMO). Having said that, he is no role model to me. I feel sorry for the guy in many ways. Just like Mick Jagger and some radio hosts, some things are better heard and not seen. DISGUSTING!!!
Steve , Charlotte, usa
Maybe "Sir" Elton should have read the recent article about 2700 people dying in Mexico so far this year in the drug wars that he is directly financing. No wonder people are turning to the BNP for old fashioned moral values in this sick joke of a country.
Arthur, Pimlico, London,
Nepotism runs in that talentless family and my question to you is why do you bother writing about these nobodies who create awards that mean nothing? please, have some respect for us readers
sarita, london,
Its all rock and roll really. A bit 1970's if you ask me!
J, Birmingham, UK
Kind of funny when you remeber the marxist idealism of her father back in the 80's.
Neil Kinnock, Pairs, France
Having listened to a number of Ms Allen's tracks lately I can only describe her vocal talent as "lacking". She is an average songwriter, but there are many great new talents out there who put her in the shade. I've never been a fan of Elton personally but he is a superior talented writer/performer
Dawn, Durham, UK
Classless....totally classless. Please pray for this girl (not a woman and definitely not a lady!). She needs help.
BTW, Elton could use some help also. He response was not so classy either.
Paco, Atlanta, USA
I have to say there were very few "winners" at this awards event.
Dan, Minneapolis, USA
Lily Allen's a wonderful talent, whilst Elton's a gnarled and second rate hasbeen. He's not fit to clean her shoes. What a petulant old tramp like him was doing there in the first place is a mystery... Well done to Lily for telling him where to get off.
Alastair, Alicante, Spain
At least Elton John has a body of work, unlike Allen! Admittedly the early albums were superior, but pub singer Martin? I think not.
Ian Smith, Sotogrande, Spain
So many people saying they don't care, yet all found the time to comment. You love it really!
Chris, Bury St Edmunds,
No grace, no decency, no manners -- call this talent?
James, Ipswich, UK
Elton John = deluded over-rated pub singer "roll out the barra!"
Martin, Cambridge, UK
Good for a laugh, nothing more.
Rowan Richardson, Alameda, US
Honestly, who cares what those two do? They're both rather disgusting.
Bette, Los Angeles, USA
Boring, Boring, Boring!......Is this really "news" .
Andrew, Truro, England
@Ali, Colombia
Exactly.
Have those that have taken Elton's side on this actually thought about what they're saying? Elton here was boasting about taking a class A drug!
Howard, Tokyo,
well she cant sing in tune so she's got to find some way to sell her albums!
kat, london,
Seems to me Eltons getting catty in his old age.
Edward Thomas, Tucson, USA
Shes done!
Shes a loser and she needs help like yesterday
Michelle, Lincoln, USA
I've never even heard of, or heard, Lily Allen. And now, I surely don't want to. Sir Elton on the other hand - an enduring classic from the word 'go.'
Maureen, Dorset,
why are we even talking about lilley allen? lilly allen is on the the problems in this world. i switch off when she's on.
Chris R, Salford, Lancashire
Any publicity is "good" publicity for MS Allen.
Maybe that's why she does it?
Mike, London,
Bedales must be so proud of producing such an incredibly unintelligent, crass, untalented waste of space.
Laura Roberts, London, UK
Cocaine = blood on your hands Elton.
ER, London,
Please don't put articles like this at the top of the page - I want to read about real art and entertainment, not the drunken antics of some talentless tart (and I don't mean Elton!)
Douglas Lee, London, UK
sounds like the best comedy programme of the year. Sam Fox and Mick Fleetwood next year guys?
richard sullivan, Chislehurst, Kent
Such a shame that her lack of command of the English language results in her having to use the "F" word so frequently.
Yet another sign of how far society is slipping towards the level of the dullard!
Pete, St Albans, England
It was an awards ceremony - without this sort of thing, it would have been completely pointless. It's called entertainment, and it certainly doesn't represent the downfall of all civilisation just because pop stars are (shock horror) swearing.
Vicky , Bolton,
This particular item in your newspaper is really very sad - sad that the Times should even bother to waste a column on such utter nonsense. People who demonstrate this kind of behaviour are very boring and repulsive. I care not one jot.
Anthony James Davies, Stockbridge,
Frankly, who really cares about Lily Allen or Elton John anyway?
Peter, London,
As lacking in class as she is in talent, so there's no surprise there.
Mike, Bristol,
"I could snort you under the table" Elton, how iconic. What kind of example is he showing? Does that really count as a dressing down? Why is she taking the blame for this when she had a couple of glasses of champagne and he boasted about his capacity to take cocaine. What a pathetic episode.
Ali, Cali, Colombia
Lily who?
A Currie, Don Mills, Canada
Exactly.
Why do these dreary bores imagine we care about their drug/drink/sexual habits?
They are like children.
Shona Mullins, Hexham, UK
Lily Allen may be 40 years younger than Elton and it shows. She will never be as iconic as Elton. She needs a lesson in manners.
Polly, Hailsham, E Sussex
What kind of example is she showing?????????
Mari, Swansea,
These people think their lives are of value to everyone else and their behaviour acceptable. They are simply disgraceful and for a young girl to use such language is shameful. Who watches this rubbish anyway and are these awards of any value at all?
Margaret, Manchester, England
Yet more evidence, if any were needed, of the decline and fall of the UK.
harry Wolf, Vancouver, Canada
I blame the parents, but then she is chav royalty i suppose.
bob, london,
Excellent role models all round.
John, Bangkok, Thailand
*sigh* who cares
benedict, london,
A boring account of boorish people's going on. Who cares about their ignorant behaviour?
Martin, Falaise, France
