Former Atomic Kitten star Kerry Katona was declared bankrupt today after losing a race against time to settle the final part of a tax bill.
The one time singer turned women’s magazine favourite managed to reduce her £417,000 tax bill to £82,000 but HM Revenue and Customs pressed ahead with the bankruptcy petition first issued in January.
Katona, who was not at the High Court, battled down to the wire, asking for more time to come up with the shortfall.
Representing Katona, Luke Harris asked the registrar to put the matter back, saying funds were available but cheques had not been cleared.
Mr Harris said as soon as the money was ready, it would be brought to the court and given to Mike Thomas, the lawyer representing HMRC.
Mr Registrar Nicholls granted an extra hour but just before 1pm called the parties back into the court and Mr Harris said he was "not in a position to assist further".
Two weeks ago Katona, who has lucrative deals with supermarket chain Iceland and OK! magazine, was given until today to find the sum by the registrar in a case that had been before the court four times.
Katona found fame and fortune in girl group Atomic Kitten in the late 1990s but faced a plethora of troubles after leaving the band in 2001. She married and then divorced Westlife singer Brian McFadden, fighting him in a bitter custody battle for their two children.
She entered rehab for cocaine and alcohol abuse and, most recently, bipolar disorder after she was held hostage in her home by burglars.
She is married to taxi driver Mark Croft, and the pair have two children.

She should ditch her taxi driver, he is an added expense she can do without. Then hopefully, she will be able to get on with her life.

Marcus I think 335 million is a bit rough,,,,no wonder she still owed 82 million,,,lol
cathy, londonuk,
I have no time for the likes of Kerry Katona, whose sob stories we hear time and time again! She is doing herself no favour by being utterly unable to budget and act responsibly...
Another one of those reality TV drama queens who lives for the moment, surrounded by her clique of losers!

Katy and Paul - she didn't get her tax bill reduced. She'd paid the first £335000.00 and still owed £82000.00 which she'd asked for extra time to get hold of. The IR can be hideous when they want
to be - anyone who's freelance knows that. It's a very easy situation to get into.
Marcus, London, UK
shame we cant get our tax bill reduced on account of it being more than we want to pay, love the jokes about on "Mock the week"
katy turner, edinburgh,
it must be hard for her . she has been trying .
maz, accrington,
The scary thought is that she's got four children to look after - she was a mess before this, surely things can only get worse from here?
charlotte, warwickshire, england
No doubt her assets will not be in her name and the taxman will not get his hands on them.
Richard, London,
My God her affairs are in a mess, who has the job of keeping all this in order? She surely has the right income....? or not, maybe it's cash-flow - if it's tied up in assets and she can't pay the tax man...well you can see what has happened. How humiliating ...Iceland etc will drop her next

Think I might give the tax man a ring next week and tell him to knock a few quid off my annual tax bill because kerry has had hers reduced so this must apply to every British TAX payer?
Before that though I must get to porche, merc, ferarri and ducati to get myself a few new cars and motorbikes.
