WE SAY: Theoretical Girl certainly wears her heart on her Sixties sleeve. Don't for one second think that means she's anything like the cynically retro Duffy or Sharleen Spiteri though. Definitely not. Amy Turnnidge, who goes under the moniker Theoretical Girl, makes a unique sound that is entirely her own. And what a beautifully exquisite sound that is.

Her songs have a lovely home-made aesthetic to them and tend to combine sweet, playful melodies with a haunting feel and jerky, feisty riffs. Similar clever contrasts are present in Amy's own look and stage presence too - part innocent little girl, part Gothic ice queen.

On Another Fight she really bares her soul - this is a singer-songwriter who means every single word and note. The lyrics are heartbreakingly honest. Her enchanting voice vulnerably pleads along to chiming guitars, begging her lover to please not have 'another fight'. At the same time, awkward riffs, urging beats and stunted rhythms make you feel almost uneasy. The powerful atmospherics evoke a feeling of solitude and hope simultaneously, and it all conjures up that very timid, desperate feeling you have when you're nervously in the singer's situation yourself. Another Fight may have a classic pop song structure, but it's a multi-layered, organic work of brilliance.

Amy has a talent for expressing emotions that is slightly Lord Byron-esque. She has taken the bad break-ups and life experiences that would have broken a lesser woman and channeled them into making great pop songs. Theoretical Girl is in a field of her own and is far more of an inspiration than the vacuous pop puppets who fill the charts these days. It would be nice if she could achieve even half of their success.

IF YOU ONLY NEED TO KNOW ONE THING: Theoretical Girl may record as a solo artist, but when she plays live she is joined by her girl group, The Equations. Rosie and Sam from Ipso Facto were also part of the equation before they left to form their own band.
